Maskeliya

Maskeliya (Old Town))

In the heart of maskeliya you could find the old town. From several miles from colombo we reached the town. We can easily find the place once we reach maskeliya.

Covered with several acres of land the town has been dismantled down to construct a water resevoir. On the momentum of destructing the town, people were brought in to the new town. Even today you can find some of the pieces of buildings and the main road that people travelled on those times. However when there are heavy rainfalls it’s hard to reach the old town due to water. In the drought season’s people can even walk in the town.

Maskeliya (Old Town) Historic Remains

In the drought seasons as I mentioned you could see some of the ancient sights in the town. As apart, the only three buildings we could find are 2 Hindu temples (Kovil), Lord Buddha temple. In the rainy seasons it’s hard to see these sights because when the water levels reach high the temples are covered as well.

2 Hindu Temple

One of the best sights in the old town is the Hindu Temples. One belonging to God Ganesh, the temples were built with rocks that still had persists its existence. Apart from God Ganesh's temple, was another god which I’m not quite sure was built in 1917. The temple was covered with best architectural designs from both the inside & the out.

Lord Buddha Temple

Apart from the two temples that lie apart is the temple that lies in the middle. Just like the two temples this temple is also made from rock so does the Buddha statue. You can also find pieces of tiles attached on the floor. Just like every temple has the dragons mouth (makara kata) so does this, because there are proofs of its existence like the outline of it which still exists on the walls of the entrance door.
